Targeting Cancer

An integrative approach

The emerging force in medicine: Functional & Integrative Healthcare

Cancer is something all humans fear and the rate of cancer does increase as we get older as our DNA gets damaged and cell proliferation goes haywire. But as we age, there is a great deal we can do to decrease the risk of acquiring a cancer and if we have abnormal cells in our bodies, then we can ensure that we don’t provide them with the dietary impacts that can ‘excite’ them into multiplying and spreading, even further. This would be folly and yet conventional medicine pays little attention to dietary advice or advice is provided to people, based on the commercial reality of large food corporations and manufacturers and the agricultural giants that shape dietetic guidelines.

My interest and approach is to seek out factors at a deeper level. Sure, I would like you to lose weight if you are overweight or obese or have deep visceral fat as these comorbidities provide an increased absolute risk for a multitude of cancers. But I would also test you to see if you are perhaps diabetic or if you are in the much-missed pre-diabetic group, as both these states are associated with a significantly higher cancer rate or poorer prognosis if you have a cancer.

Genetic analysis can assess your ability to biotransform toxic components from the environment or hormones created in your own body. There are 3 phases in biotransformation and subsequent excretion of thousands of chemicals we come in contact with on a daily basis. The cytochrome p450 (CYP450) system is vital in this process and where a mere 57 enzymes oversee the elimination of essentially any toxic newcomer that threatens your body. This amazing and highly versatile system has one major drawback. Because of the small number of CYP enzymes in the body, speed is the limiting factor and the brakes being applied on the system is the price paid for such unbelievable versatility. You need a super-functioning Phase-II system of enzymes that can draw away and immediately deal with the highly toxic compounds created by the Phase-I system and then rapidly eliminated by the Phase-III process. Any ‘choke-point’ in this process will mean an increase in toxic metabolites building up in the body.

We can check for genetic polymorphisms that may increase your risk and then tailor your diet to one that addresses the Insulin/IgF-1 axis strongly associated with many cancers.
Many nutrients have highly protective effects and yet many dietary practices may have extremely adverse outcomes.

This approach is for an someone who wants a big-picture assessment by someone with medical qualifications from a world renowned medical school who has the skills and experience to know what is and is not significant in a medical sense.
