Steroidogenesis

All steroid hormones are produced from the precursor molecule, cholesterol and most of the cholesterol substrate for human steroidogenic cells is derived from low density lipoprotein [LDL].
The cholesterol is converted to the ‘mother’ of all hormones, pregnenolone in the mitochondria by an enzyme called P450 Side Chain Cleavage [SCC] enzyme.
