Two highly respected universities have shown in controlled research studies how important vegetable juice can be for a variety of reasons including weight loss and blood pressure control. Vegetable juice made from a variety of multicoloured vegetables is rich in phytochemicals and micronutrients including importantly a high level of potassium for kidney health and blood pressure control. This juice will also provide your body with an important alkaline buffer that will offset the many acidic foods you consume [dairy, meat, grains, sugar, alcohol].

Vegetable Juice

For weight loss, high blood pressure, the Metabolic Syndrome

"Health and nutrition professionals must help people find simple ways for people to get their vegetables or they simply won't do it ...vegetable juice is something that people enjoy, plus it's convenient and portable, which makes it simple to drink every day."

Carl Keen, PhD, Professor of Nutrition and Internal Medicine at the University of California-Davis

The enormous benefit of adding 2 - 3 glasses of vegetable juice to your diet 144 - 149

  • According to BusinessWire:
"Decades of studies have documented the link between eating a diet rich in vegetables and multiple health benefits, yet nearly eight out of 10 people worldwide fall short of the daily recommendation.(1) Research presented at the International Symposium on Human Health Effects of Fruits and Vegetables suggests the best approach may be to focus on the factors that are often behind this vegetable gap: convenience and enjoyment. "
  • There has been a misguided chorus from dietitians that if whole vegetables are not eaten that the exercise is futile. This couldn't be further from the truth. In fact vegetable juices made from 8 or more vegetables can be a treasure trove of phytochemicals and micronutrients including being a rich source of potassium that is a critical component of the DASH diet that has been shown scientifically to help control blood pressure and can even prevent high blood pressure if this strategy was employed by children and adults from as early in possible in life.
  • Vegetable juice is also alkaline and will help to offset all the acidic foods [grains, dairy, meat, alcohol and sugars] ---

Important research from two distinguished universities

  1. University of California-Davis

This university conducted a 12-week study in adults aged 40-65 years.(2) The participants in the study who had borderline high blood pressure and who drank one to two servings of V8 juice significantly lowered their blood pressure. This is a fantastic way of lowering blood pressure through food rather than resorting to pharmaceuticals which may condemn an individual to side-effects and life long dependence on medication rather than attack the problem from its root level and that is diet and lifestyle.
  2. Baylor College of Medicine

Is a highly regarded medical research university located in Houston, Texas, USA. Their research revealed that drinking vegetable juice had a positive effect on overweight individuals who had the metabolic syndrome. These individuals lost more weight when  compared to non-juice drinkers146.

Mix Vinegar in low sodium V8

Fat metabolizing gene 147,148,149

  • PPAR-gamma regulates a number of molecules that are involved in fat metabolism:
    - ACO a rate-controlling enzyme involved in fatty-acid oxidation and thermogenesis.
    - CPT-1 a regulator of fatty acid oxidation in the mitochondria which are cellular organelles involved in energy production.
    - UCP-2 an uncoupling protein involved in thermogenesis -
    See Brown Fat

How does vinegar and the acetic acid [AcOH] in vinegar work to increase fat loss?

  • Researchers found that PPAR-gamma receptor was higher in study animals after being given acetic acid.
  • So fat loss [fatty acid oxidation] is stimulated by increasing fatty acid oxidation and increasing thermogenesis helping to 'burn off' calories.
  • You only need a small amount of around 1 tablespoon in each glass of V8
  • Apple cider vinegar is a good choice but it is not the type of vinegar only the acetic acid that is important. Apple cider vinegar though tastes good in V8.

Adding even more phytochemicals to your diet

  • As indicated above, almost eight out of 10 people worldwide fall short of the daily recommendation144.
  • Study after study has shown the benefits of increasing vegetable and fruit intake due to the highly protective effects of the thousands of phytochemicals found in the various multicoloured fruits and vegetables.
  • The problem is how do you consume 10 - 15 servings of vegetables and fruit a day when 5 servings of whole vegetables can be a problem [1 serving fruit = 1 small piece of fruit such as a small apple or 1 cup of vegetables]
  • Products such as NanoGreens-10 have been developed to provide a a powerful hit of fruit and vegetable phytochemicals that can protect your body against oxidative stress and support cellular function.
  • Enjoy the highly protective effects of fruits and vegetables in a delicious blend. Simply mix one scoop into some fruit juice to enjoy the enormous health benefits of phytochemicals.

The extremely important Acid - Base Balance in your body

  • Common foods are acid forming and 'report to the kidney as either acid or base' [Cordain 2005]. --- The term 'base' is used synonymously for 'alkaline'.
  • Excessive acid loads from grains, meats, dairy, alcohol, salt and processed foods rob your bones of calcium and your muscles of amino acids in particular glutamine.
  • Offset this by eating copious amounts of fruits and in particular vegetables. Have vegetable juices such as low-sodium V8® to neutralize this acidic load on the body.
  • Having 3 glasses of low-sodium V8® 3 times a day 1/2 hr before meals with Apple Cider Vinegar which is also aklakine, will not only provide a neutralizing alkaline juice but the acetic acid in the apple cider vinegar can help to trigger fat metabolizing genes [Kondo 2009].
  • V8® has been shown from research at Baylor College of Medicine and the University of California-Davis to help you lose weight - see NutriDesk QuickGuide: Vegetable Juice - this will also add to your vegetable serving count [an amazing 6 - 9 servings from 3 glasses]
  • You put your self at long-term risk of osteoporosis and muscle loss [sarcopenia] if you don't increase your intake of alkaline foods [fruits and mainly vegetables]
